Selena Gomez is taking the heat in the kitchen.

The singer-actress slices and dices in “Selena + Chef,” debuting Aug. 13 on the new HBO Max streaming service. The 10-episode series was shot in the kitchen of Gomez’s new Los Angeles-area house. Her grandparents and two friends, who have been quarantining with her, serve as taste testers.

“I really thought this would be something lighthearted because I was getting definitely down,” she said in a video conference Wednesday. “Of course, there’s more important things going on but this was an opportunity to make something that could make people smile.”

Guiding Gomez remotely are chefs Nyesha Arrington, Roy Choi, Tonya Holland, Daniel Holzman, Jon & Vinny, Candice Kumai, Ludo Lefebvre, Antonia Lofaso, Nancy Silverton and Angelo Sosa. They coach her through making such dishes as Korean breakfast tacos, matcha chocolate chip cookies, spicy miso ramen, seafood tostada and cheese souffle.

The NBA Called In A Professional All-Star Chef To Fix The NBA Bubble Food Situation

In mid-July, NBA players began arriving to the “NBA Bubble” in Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports. Photos of their less-than-desirable food options quickly turned into memes, and although those photos only showed the food they were given for the first 36 hours in Le Bubble, the league brought in chef Shawn Loving to fix the problem.

Shawn Loving is an executive chef for Team USA basketball, so he has experience cooking for elite athletes in larger quantities. Though it’s unclear just how many people are in the NBA bubble, The Daily Beast reported that Loving feeds about 125 people in three different waves of meals. A team’s practice and game schedule will affect when and how they eat, such as a pre-practice smoothie or a post-game recovery snack.

The All-Star Chef Tasked With Fixing the NBA Bubble’s Food Nightmare

It’s been eons since early July, when athletes first arrived at the NBA bubble and started joking about poorly-lit photos of pasta. The gist of the mini media scandal was the food; namely, that it wasn’t fine dining. The whole ordeal had the trappings of a second Fyre Festival: very rich guys semi-stranded in less-than-luxury accommodations, forced to eat meals resembling summer camp fare in takeout containers.

The sob story later proved overblown. The pictured meals were only served during the 36-hour isolation period, arriving individually packaged in biodegradable containers, as many of the bubble’s servers—unlike the athletes—were not granted daily testing, creating what The Athletic called “the Disney food’s aesthetics problem.” After players emerged from their lockdowns, they had several alternatives, including local restaurant delivery and the option to hire a private chef.
