KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 — Restaurant Eat and Cook has been selected by the organisers of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants to receive the much coveted American Express One To Watch Award.

A first for a Malaysian restaurant, this award recognises Eat and Cook as a rising star in the region and celebrates its gastronomic excellence, innovation and potential.

Restaurant Dewakan broke into the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2019 and last year, three Malaysian restaurants — Dewakan, Nadodi and Gen — got into the extended list.

Eat and Cook is a testament of chefs Lee Zhe Xi and Soh Yong Zhi’s perseverance. During the pandemic, the duo lost their hotel chef jobs.

4 of the Best Laotian Restaurants in Los Angeles and Orange County

Lao food has been obscured in Southern California and all over the United States for too long, for a tangle of reasons. But a generation of Lao cooks is working to change this, with small food businesses and restaurants, social media campaigns and recipe videos.

Here are a few restaurants where you can find Lao cooks making a wealth of dishes to accompany sticky rice — from laap, the herbaceous, meaty salads seasoned with roasted rice powder (often Anglicized as “larb”), to thum mak hoong, the Lao-style papaya salad with an intense, umami-rich depth and tamarind tang.

The sisters Manoy and Kayla Keungmanivong used to work as cooks in their father’s restaurant, until they took it over about a decade ago. As co-chefs, they think of it as their mission to preserve traditional Lao flavors for their community and their elders, who visit the restaurant regularly. This means you

Food Writers & Chefs Talk The Best Restaurants Of 2021

We didn’t eat at enough restaurants last year. Sure, in a lot of ways 2021 was more “normal” than 2020 — we started going to concerts, bars, movie theaters, and generally having lives again. Covid cases were on a downward trend! Vaccination rates were rising! Then we got hit with the Delta and Omicron variants and that renewed sense of optimism started to fizzle.

As of January 4th, there’s a fair bit that’s unclear. How serious is Omicron? Is it less dangerous than previous strains? More contagious?

The fears (many valid!) associated with this new strain of Covid means restaurants — which generally run on paper-thin margins — are struggling once again. So, in an effort to give some shine to our favorite independently owned and operated businesses, we reached out to some of our favorite chefs, food personalities, and food writers and asked them

Cook County follows Chicago with COVID-19 vaccination mandate for patrons of restaurants, gyms and other businesses

CHICAGO — Cook County will follow Chicago in imposing a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for patrons 5 and older of restaurants, bars, gyms and an assortment of other businesses, officials are expected to announce Thursday.

The mandate for suburban Cook County takes effect Monday, Jan. 3, as does Chicago’s.

The indoor establishments that will be required to ask for proof of vaccination status also include gyms and anywhere else food and drink are served, according to a copy of the COVID-19 order from the Cook County Department of Public Health. Those who are 16 and older also must show an ID, such as a driver’s license, that matches with vaccination card.

The patrons must be fully vaccinated, meaning they are two weeks after their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or their single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Cook County officials continue to urge people to get
