3 min read

Last week’s recall of cooked pork products has now expanded to include more than two million pounds of food, and 10 additional items. On December 5, Alexander & Hornung, a meat producer and a unit of Perdue, recalled approximately 234,391 pounds of fully cooked ham and pepperoni. By December 11, the recall was updated to include 2,320,774 pounds of products.

The items, which include several different varieties of ham and pepperoni, are being recalled because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. All products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. M10125” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were shipped to retail locations nationwide, including Whole Foods.

Whole Foods issued its own recall on its website for Wellshire Farms Fully Cooked Hams, because Wellshire Farms works with Alexander & Hornung as a co-packer.

“The health and safety of consumers is our top concern,” Chris McCarthy, vice president of sales at Wellshire Farms, said in a statement. “Wellshire is deeply committed to food safety and will continue to investigate this matter and invest in our processes to ensure the quality and wholesomeness of our products. We will do our best to make certain this never happens again.”

Thus far, there have been no reports of illness related to any Alexander & Hornung pork products, however consumers should now re-check their refrigerators and freezers to make sure they don’t have any of these items in their possession. If they do, the products should be thrown away immediately.

Eating food contaminated with Listeria (L. monocytogenes) can cause listeriosis, which can be incredibly harmful to older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Listeriosis symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal ailments.
